Woodstock, Alabama – Employees from the Town of Woodstock came together to support Woodstock Elementary School’s recent Literacy Day, volunteering their time and enthusiasm to make the day memorable for students. The event, organized by school librarian Jessica Guy, featured a whimsical Story Walk theme with local businesses and organizations sponsoring story stops.

Town of Woodstock employees and volunteer Jessica Parks Matthews stepped into the roles of beloved characters from the classic story, “The Wizard of Oz.”

Volunteers from the Town of Woodstock included Facilities Manager Jay Matthews and Assistant Town Clerk Carla Smotherman. Each wore a delightful costume: Jay Matthews portrayed the Tin Man, Carla Smotherman embraced the role of Dorothy, and Jessica Matthews brought the Cowardly Lion to life.

The Town’s participation added a magical touch to the day, as volunteers read excerpts from the book to the attentive students, who were captivated by the lively storytelling.

“Being a part of enriching the lives of children in our community by fostering literacy is rewarding on both a personal and professional level and we’re grateful for the opportunity,” noted Assistant Town Clerk Carla Smotherman. “We can’t wait to participate again next year.”

As a special treat, each child received a momento from the Town of Woodstock, making the day even more memorable. Staff worked to decorate the Town side-by-side to create a festive atmosphere, and the children’s excitement was palpable as they interacted with the volunteers and engaged with the story.

“Literacy is the foundation for success, and we are truly grateful to have had the chance to support this event alongside the wonderful staff at Woodstock Elementary,” said Mayor Jeff Dodson. “A special thanks to Town Clerk Tiffney McCulley for her valuable assistance in making this event possible. It’s heartwarming to see our community come together in such a meaningful way, and we’re honored to play a part in inspiring the next generation.”
